Accessibility

Accessibility has been enhanced on this website in several ways.

Access keys. These let you navigate this website quickly using the keyboard. If you are using Windows press "Alt", "Shift" and the letter key in the brackets following the link to go to that page.

The Access keys for this site are:

  • Home page, accesskey = Alt, shift + "h"
  • Education and Training page, accesskey = Alt, shift + "e"
  • Environment page, accesskey = Alt, shift + "n"
  • Heritage page, accesskey = Alt, shift + "g"
  • Art at Cambo page, accesskey = Alt, shift + "a"
  • Volunteering page, accesskey = Alt, shift + "v"
  • Projects page, accesskey = Alt, shift + "p"
  • Events page, accesskey = Alt, shift + "t"
  • History page, accesskey = Alt, shift + "h"
  • Accessibility page, accesskey = Alt, shift + "0"
  • Contact page, accesskey = Alt, shift + "c"
  • Links page, accesskey = Alt, shift + "l"

Text reading software. Headings, sub-headings, paragraphs, navigation lists and links are presented within the appropriate HTML tags to ensure text reading software can follow the meaning of the content.

"ALT" attributes. For visitors who are unable to access the images for any reason the images on our website have alternative text attributes. This ensures that non-text content can be interpreted by text browsers and assistive technologies such as screen readers. If an image is used for simply decorative purposes, the text attribute for the image is left empty in line with accepted best practice.

Information separated from styling. All styling has been applied using CSS. This site is designed to allow users to apply their own CSS styling. The presentation of this website can be changed by turning off the style sheet in the browser preferences or by substituting your own style sheet.

Text sizes are all scaleable using your browser's text size menu command. You can change the text size in Microsoft Internet Explorer by selecting View > Text size followed by your preferred text size from 'Smallest' to 'Largest'. The default setting is 'Medium'. You can change the text size in Mozilla Firefox by pressing the Control (Ctrl) key and the plus (+), minus (-) and zero (0) keys. Select Text Zoom which will make the controls only apply to text, not images: press the Alt key to temporarily bring up the traditional Firefox menus. At the top of the Firefox window, click the View menu, then go to Zoom. Select Zoom Text Only. The website's fonts have been chosen for their legibility on computer screens.

Minimising the use of images. Live text is used rather than graphics wherever possible to reduce page download time and to increase your control over text size.

The Ease of Access Centre (in Windows start menu under "Accessories/Ease of Access") has more features which can improve the accessibility of your web browser including high contrast, screen narrator and screen magnifier.

High contrast view is available at any time using the keyboard key-press combination ALT + left SHIFT + PRINT SCREEN.
